Draft Indian Telecommunication Bill, 2022
The Department of Telecommunications vide its notification dated September 21, 2022, has released the draft Indian Telecommunication Bill, 2022 (“Draft Bill”). The Draft Bill now replaces outdated concepts under the existing framework. Further, the Draft Bill seeks to replace the following 3 (three) laws:
- Indian Telegraph Act, 1885;
- Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act, 1933; and
- Telegraph Wires (Unlawful Possession) Act, 1950.
However, with a view to ensure smooth transitioning to the new framework, the Draft Bill provides for continuity of actions taken under the repealed laws. It also provides that rules under the repealed laws would continue till such time that new rules are formulated.
